Update, Procreate has become a dangerous distraction for me...
While I intended for this next update to focus on Adobe Illustrator since I already talked about Procreate a few weeks back, there have been some developments on the Procreate end that I wanted to share.
Innocently, I decided to check out a few more Procreate tutorials in the hopes of learning a few new skills that would improve my designs or at least make the design process easier on my end. From this quest I did find one really useful tutorial from Bardot Brush that taught me a few new tricks. This video introduced me to beneficial features like alpha lock as well as some more fun elements the program offers like the ability to export a video that shows the evolution of the design.
These are videos I will most likely never share since my process is an experience to say the least. The number of times I will redraw a cloud to be just the way I want it is obscene and really no one needs to see that. I don't even want to relive it myself; that cloud is the bane of my existence. But that's besides the point because as entertaining as this tutorial was to watch, I’m definitely someone who learns better by doing and the video wasn’t exactly motivating me enough to follow along.
So after picking up a few things from the Procreate overview tutorial, I decided to try one of the videos that takes you through a step-by-step process to create a specific design.
I’m now obsessed with these videos.
I think everything the creator Art With Flo makes is beautiful and I want my very own versions of all the tutorials she offers on her YouTube page.
Since the discovery of these videos, I have created three of her designs. Her step-by-step tutorials range from 15 minutes to about 45 minutes. I’ve been trying to work through some of her shorter videos recently since I really should be doing my homework (aka the blogs I actually planned to document this process) instead of these tutorials, but as a beginner even the shorter videos take a decent time out of my day. At this point, I will literally do anything to avoid homework this semester and the nice thing is that I can consider this kind of distraction somewhat work-related because I am learning.
Below you’ll find the three designs I have created thus far and the links to their respective tutorial videos:
Now with these designs I was just copying Art With Flo's work, but going through the process with her helped me better understand what I consider some of the more advanced of features of Procreate. Many of her designs take advantage of things like alpha lock, clipping mask, and Gaussian blur. These are just a few of the new features I've learned that can enhance my work. Now can I use them outside of when she tells me to in a tutorial video yet...not so sure about that, but when she advises me how and when these tools absolutely change the game.
Following along on her tutorials has also helped me expand my brush use and color palettes. Generally, I just use the Calligraphy Monoline brush for the digitally traced picture portraits I'm making for my project, but now I've branched out a bit to add texture and new patterns to my versions of her designs. Also, on the color palette front, what's so great about these tutorials is that she shares the color palettes she uses in these designs. Linked in the description of each video, if she uses a pre-made palette or personal brushes, you can download them for free making it even easier to follow along.
But anyways just figured I'd throw in another Procreate update since I found these new tutorial videos and figured my delay in blog posts warranted an explanation. The fact this post is going up the same day as the 2nd design blog that should've been posted weeks ago speaks for itself.
