What I'm Using/Procreate Progress

While I am just about finished with my next two designs I took a little detour from this project I planned to explore Procreate.  Since I have prior experience with Adobe Illustrator, I definitely noticed my lack of knowledge of Procreate and simply the lack of experience with the program reflecting in my work.

To use Procreate I have been working on my 8th generation iPad with the 1st generation Apple pencil.  After I conducted some research and watched a few tutorials featuring Procreate, I gathered most users tend to invest in a matte finish screen protector as well.  This type of screen protector provides a paper-like feel that personally I think makes drawing much more natural.  I did not have this screen-protector before I started this project so linked here is the one I picked out for my iPad.

All set with my iPad, Apple pencil, and screen protector, I decided to use a recent show I watched as inspiration to play around with Procreate.  As I mentioned in my first blog, I always wanted to become a famous singer or actor, but that’s really just not in the cards for me.  This random dream I’m sure most people have had at one point or another tends to come back up when I watch a show that I inevitably become obsessed with.  That show this time around was Julie and the Phantoms.  So to kill two birds with one stone, I decided to use a few of the characters from Julie and the Phantoms to subdue my obsession while simultaneously test out Procreate some more.

Below are the three close-ups shots of the characters and the respective digitally traced portrait I made for each of them.  I wanted to work on incorporating some more details and the necklaces, fanny pack strap, and flannel shirt provided me with a few simple elements to work on that.  Also, extracting the right color from the photos is something I am still getting the hang of so this was definitely good practice for that as well.  Creating two similar yet different enough shades for the face and neck is not easy for me and I hope this helped play out some of the potential color combos that work or maybe even don't work.

That was Luke

This is Alex

And then finally Reggie

In all honesty these were mostly just for fun and a way to avoid real work.  Also, they were an excuse to finish re-watching the entire Twilight series for the 10th time.  I made it through almost all the movies while working on an art project for 2-D Design and I couldn't just not finish watching Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2.

Regardless, playing around these designs helped me get more comfortable with the app and make the process a little more natural.  When I watch Procreate tutorials, some of these artists just move so quickly and navigate the app with such ease that I just want to use it more to maybe one day work at half the speed they do.  Since these designs were not originally ones I intended to share, I used this time as a way to test out different tools and techniques too.

Procreate has so much to offer its overwhelming and I know I’m just scratching the surface of all there is to use.  So as I continue my designs for this project I hope each use or tutorial brings a new tip or trick I can employ in future work.  And who knows maybe by the end I’ll be flying through these designs...or then again, maybe I’ll just record it and increase the playback speed to create the illusion of mastery everyone seems to have with this program.
